Staying at Villa des Oliviers — our 14-person villa in Sanary-sur-Mer — puts you within reach of some of the most extraordinary dining the Var coast has to offer. From the fish markets of Sanary to the shaded terraces of medieval villages, the region is a food lover's playground. Here are my personal picks for a memorable table, many of them within 30 to 90 minutes from the villa.
What Makes This Region a Gastronomic Treasure?
The western Var sits at the intersection of Provence and the Mediterranean. Olive groves, vineyards, fishing boats, and weekly open-air markets feed a restaurant scene that is rich without being pretentious. Whether you rent a car for a day trip or simply walk down to the port of Sanary, the ingredients — and the cooks who know what to do with them — are exceptional. Groups of 14 staying at the villa will find that lunch excursions and dinner outings become the highlight of the week.
Le Prado — Giens Peninsula, the Hidden Gem of the Var
If there is one address I keep coming back to, it is La Brasserie Le Prado on the tip of the Giens Peninsula, at the Port de la Tour Fondue. Perched at the crossroads of two coastal hiking trails, the restaurant offers a panoramic dining room with an unobstructed view of the Îles d'Or — Porquerolles, Port-Cros, and Le Levant glittering on the horizon. The terrace faces the Musée de la Tour Fondue and the ferry jetty for Porquerolles, so combine lunch here with an afternoon island excursion.
The kitchen is anchored in the sea: fresh mussels cooked to order (bouchot in season, Irish Bio, Chareau de Marseille depending on the calendar), grilled fish suggested daily on the slate, fish and chips made entirely from scratch. Prices are genuinely accessible. Open every day year-round for breakfast from 7 am, lunch until 2:30 pm, and dinner from April to October. A dream stop after hiking the sentier du littoral.
Address: Rue François Joseph Fournier, Port de la Tour Fondue, Giens, 83400 Hyères — about 35 minutes from the villa.
The Seafood Classics of Sanary-sur-Mer
Sanary itself offers excellent waterfront restaurants along the port. The catch arrives early in the morning at the covered market, and by noon the bistros are serving grilled daurade, sea bream, and tielle. For a group of fourteen, I always recommend arriving before 12:30 to secure the terrace tables overlooking the fishing boats. The walk back along the port is the perfect digestif. From the villa it takes just ten minutes by car — book your stay and I will share my current favourites directly.
La Mirabelle — Cannes, Le Suquet
Tucked into the old quarter of Le Suquet in Cannes, La Mirabelle is the kind of neighbourhood restaurant that locals actually go to. Provençal dishes, fresh ingredients sourced from regional farmers and fishermen, and a bouillabaisse that earns the name. Cannes is about 75 minutes from Sanary along the coast road — a beautiful drive, and well worth an evening.
Astoux et Brun — Cannes, La Croisette
For a grand seafood plateau, Astoux et Brun near the Promenade de la Croisette has been a Cannes institution for over 60 years. Oysters, clams, langoustines, lobster — the display is theatrical and the freshness irreproachable. A fine choice for a special occasion dinner during a Cannes day trip from the villa.
La Palme d'Or — Hotel Martinez, Cannes
When the group wants a truly exceptional meal, La Palme d'Or at the Hotel Martinez is one of the great addresses on the French Riviera. Michelin-starred, beautifully composed menus, and a dining room that captures the golden-age glamour of Cannes. Reserve well in advance, particularly during the film festival period in May.
Le Park 45 — Grand Hyatt, Cannes
Another Michelin-starred option, Le Park 45 combines French and Mediterranean flavours with impeccable presentation. The roasted sea bass with fennel and saffron is a signature worth the journey. Elegant without being stiff — a good fit for a mixed group that includes both serious food enthusiasts and relaxed holiday diners.
Le Roof — Five Seas Hotel, Cannes
Perched on the rooftop of the Five Seas Hotel, Le Roof combines a Mediterranean-Asian menu with sweeping views across the bay. The miso-glazed black cod and the panoramic terrace are the two main reasons to go. Ideal for a sunset dinner during a Cannes excursion.
Bandol and the Vineyards
Ten minutes from the villa, the port of Bandol combines waterfront restaurants with one of the finest AOC appellations in France. Pair a Bandol rosé with grilled octopus on a sun-filled terrace — simple, perfect. I have written a full guide to the vineyards of Bandol AOC if you want to combine a dégustation with lunch.
Practical Tips for Groups of 14
Always reserve: A table for fourteen is a logistical exercise in any restaurant. Call at least a week in advance, more during July and August.
Lunch over dinner: Many of the best Provençal kitchens do their finest work at lunch. Prices are lower, the light is extraordinary, and you can nap it off by the villa's infinity pool.
Market mornings first: The Thursday market in Sanary is one of the finest in France. Buy local cheeses, olives, and charcuterie, then head to a restaurant for the main course.
Car logistics: The villa has parking for the group. For Cannes or the Giens Peninsula, two cars comfortably accommodate fourteen people over two trips.
FAQ — Dining Near Villa des Oliviers, Sanary-sur-Mer
What is the best restaurant near the Giens Peninsula?
La Brasserie Le Prado plage ,(https://www.pradeauplage.com/) at the Port de la Tour Fondue is the standout address. It offers fresh seafood, a panoramic view of the Îles d'Or, and accessible prices — open year-round and ideal before or after a Porquerolles ferry trip.
Can a group of 14 people dine out easily from Sanary-sur-Mer?
Yes, with advance reservations. The Var coast has many restaurants accustomed to large Provençal family lunches. Calling a week ahead, or asking François to recommend and help book, makes the process smooth. It is one of the services included when you book the Villa des Oliviers directly.
How far is Cannes from Sanary-sur-Mer?
Approximately 75 minutes by car along the A8 motorway. A comfortable day-trip distance for dinner — leave at 6 pm, dine in Cannes, return by midnight along a coast road that is magical after dark.
What type of cuisine is typical around Sanary?
The Var coast specialises in Mediterranean and Provençal cooking: fresh grilled fish, bouillabaisse, tapenade, local cheeses, Bandol AOC wines, and extraordinary olive oils. The ingredients speak for themselves — the best kitchens here do very little to interfere with them.
